On January 27, 1556, Humayun fell down the stairs of his library, the Sher Mandal in Delhi's Purana Qila. He succumbed to his injuries two days later, on January 29, 1556. His sudden death led to the immediate succession of Akbar, who was in Punjab at the time, under the regency of Bairam Khan.
